time

Finding the time.  The age-old dilemma.

Hoping to get a couple of things done tomorrow.  Gonna try to remix a couple of tunes and get a new one on the go.

I still have a real epic on the back-burner.  It is a monster tune but I haven’t yet finished the lyrics.  I do however finally have a title… PLAY.  You heard it here first.  It may take a while (read years) longer to complete but it is going to be huge.  Similar in style (at the moment) to the comedy is over, but with an even bigger hook, and with even less structure.  CONFESSION OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL is my outlet to inflict this kind of torment on you.  I’ve just gotta get on with it rather than watch Masterchef! 😉

doctor who

So, that was the new doctor who tonight. Consensus on the interweb so far seems to be “whoopie, it’s great”.

Well, I wasn’t convinced. Hmmm, what have they done to the theme tune over the years? How did we get to this? The theme tune was one of the great electro tunes on tv. Seems those days have gone. And I hate to say it, but FAR TOO MUCH BLOODY BOMBAST OF MUSIC in EVERY, SINGLE scene! Sometimes silence is golden… and that comes from a die-hard wall of sound merchant!

Great assistant though!

Tinkering with some new songs. I should have them up and ready soon. The album is certainly taking shape.

colour my grey sky

Just spent the evening playing around with an idea.  It is just a single line, repeated over and over like a mantra.  Just me and my guitar.  Played live.   I thought it would be another piece of a song for my ever expanding scrapbook – I have a selection of ideas that I then go back and work on.  But no… this one actually sounds like it could be something, on its own.  No verse, no chorus, no hook, no anything.  It’s not played or sung perfectly either.  Just a scrap.  But it sounds sweet… to me.  I reckon it might be a contender for album closer (after the ‘proper’ album closer the comedy is over).

the comedy is over

I’ve been asked to give a ‘background’ to “the comedy is over” for a podcast. Never had to do that before. Let’s have a think. The song used to be a gig-opener as a full on instrumental and was inspired by the 1970s War of the Worlds concept album. Later I put some lyrics to the music and was in part inspired by Beethoven’s alleged final words. It is now a classic album ‘closer’… so in a way it has come full circle. The song is really about taking a grip of your life and not letting other people drag you down.  The way the song starts is a nod to Fragile, the first album I ever owned.  This seminal album by Yes was rescued from a dustbin by my nextdoor neighbour (a dustbin man) whilst on his rounds.  I was only a kid, but for some reason he thought that I should have it.  I didn’t get into the content of the music until a lot later in life… but the gatefold sleeve artwork was something to behold.  Kind of links in with War of the Worlds.  A past era.  In this download age 😉
